#1 - Supernatural
My umbrella does nothing. In a matter of seconds, the rain has soaked me through. It’s not the water that bothers me, though. It’s the dress. The rain has turned it into a clingy mess of fabric that is close to impossible to run in. My choice of outfit is the least of my worries.
I sprint past a maple tree, its bare branches reaching through the shadowy night like arms trying to grab me. I run faster. All I have to do is make it to the end of the street.
A big puddle hides the uneven cement in front of me until I’m tripping over it. I land hard on my knees, scraping the bare skin, adding blood to the rain running down my legs. No matter. I scramble to my feet, leaving the umbrella behind.
I stumble the rest of the way, feeling its hot breath on my neck as I cross the threshold of the sidewalk. I crumple to the ground, crying in relief as the barrier holds, keeping the wraith at bay.
#2 - Love Gone Wrong
My bare feet have gone numb from the freezing cement and rain, and I’m beginning to regret my decision to leave my heels behind. But what’s done is done. Now, my feet steadily slapping the cement is the only sound apart from the pitter-patter of rain on my umbrella.
I pass a streetlight. Its light is fighting with the rain, but I can’t tell which of them is winning because my eyes are immediately drawn to the hedges across the street.
Subconsciously, I have brought myself here. These hedges mark the edge of his perfectly manicured lawn. I avert my gaze, but the damage is already done. He is already flooding my thoughts. Memories breaking down the walls I carefully constructed, brick by brick.
He is like the rain, pouring down on me. Even with my umbrella I can’t stay dry, and no matter how fast I run, I can’t escape the storm.
#3 - Love Gone Right
In my haste, I forgot to put on shoes. But somehow I remembered to grab an umbrella. It did practically nothing to keep me dry as I sprinted down the sidewalk, trees and streetlights passing by in a blur.
I hardly noticed the rain at all. My mind was so focused on the car that had just driven by that there was no room for anything else.
I knew exactly where it was going. I would find it parked a few blocks away. My feet couldn’t carry me there fast enough.
The car was exactly where it should be. I moved past it, toward the house. My whole body shook as I raised my hand to knock, whether with cold or anticipation I couldn’t be sure. My knuckles hit the wood with a resounding knock and almost immediately the door was opened.
He pulled me inside, wrapped his coat around my shaking shoulders. I couldn’t contain myself any longer.
“I love you.”
