If this fight went on any longer I’d lose the hostage for sure, and I wasn’t going to let that happen. I ducked behind the nearest column, breathing hard and bleeding even harder. The slash to my arm had gone from bad to worse in a matter of moments. I pushed the pain to the side and forced myself to think.
“That’s right, Miss Electrik, just think and you’ll have me defeated soon!” Sanguine called from across the room in the most sincere voice. And it wasn’t even a fake sincere voice that most villains would have employed.
The infuriating man was unceasingly positive, no matter which side you were on.
Clenching my jaw, I snapped my head around to yell back, and that’s when I saw it. The metal catwalk a few feet away. I grinned as the idea took perfect shape in my mind.
“You’re right, I will have you defeated soon!” I called, as I leapt from behind the pillar, jumped for the railing of the catwalk, and swung myself up.
I had only a split second to set my footing and dodge the knife that was flying at me. A sidestep kept the blade from slicing my stomach open. I cursed under my breath at the close call, just how many knives did he have?
Apparently, he was down to his last one because instead of throwing the steel at me, he hauled himself up to the other end of the catwalk and brandished it in my direction.
“Let’s finish this, Lee-Lee,” he said with a smirk.
Lee-Lee? We’d only fought a handful of times, and now he had the audacity to give me a nickname! I was officially over this fight.
“Sleep tight,” I said with a smile.
His eyes widened as he suddenly realized his mistake. He tried to jump off the catwalk, but my surge of electricity was much faster than his reflexes. It sparked in a glorious blue arc across the metal catwalk and hit him hard. He went down instantly, and I dropped to my knees, exhausted.
I gave myself a moment to catch my breath, then climbed back to my feet. Clutching my still bleeding arm, I limped to where he lay. Pressing two fingers to his neck, I felt for a pulse. It was easy to find, and I breathed a sigh of relief that I hadn’t killed him. I was still getting used to my power, and in my wounded state it was a lot harder to control.
Speaking of wounded, the young man who Sanguine had kidnapped earlier today was still unconscious on the ground below. I looked back and forth between the two unconscious men and sighed. As much as I wanted to bring Sanguine in for questioning, I could only carry one of them out of this building and the hero code mandated I save the hostage. I just hoped that the sirens I heard in the distance would get here in time to apprehend Sanguine.
I jumped to the ground as softly as I could, wincing as my left ankle screamed in protest. With a deep breath, I reached down and hefted the boy over my shoulder. His weight was almost too much for me, so I reached into my power and sent extra electric signals to my muscle system. That took the strain off enough for now, but I could already feel the headache coming on from using so much of my power.
I sighed as I limped away from the scene. Hero work sucked.
Meanwhile, back on the catwalk…
The feel of her fingers on my neck lingered, and I cracked my eyes open with a smile. She was a wonderful opponent and beautiful beneath that mask she wore. I knew it was wrong to think that, really I did, but I couldn’t help it.
I watched as she carried the boy I’d kidnapped out of the building. It was unfortunate that she’d gotten here before I could drain him, but it was a necessary problem to have. I got to my feet, head spinning from the blast of electricity she’d hit me with. I was lucky that a headache seemed to be my only side effect. She had held back with the blast for sure. Whether that was her intention or not, I couldn’t say. Either way, I was lucky to have come back to consciousness so quickly. The sirens were closer than usual, and I still had work to do.
I made my way to the opposite end of the catwalk and smiled. A pool of blood was gleaming on the metal surface. Her blood. I took what I needed, feeling a small pang of sadness at the fact that I’d had to hurt her to acquire this. But it was a necessary evil. Everything I’d had to do lately was.
I stared at the vial of blood in my hand and felt the first spark of hope I’d had since the accident.
“I’ve got you now, Lee-Lee, and you’re going to help me.”
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed this week’s somewhat Valentine’s Day-esque story. As always, give this story a like if you feel inclined and leave your thoughts in the comments. I love hearing from you!
Have a great week, see you next Thursday!
I love this sm. I love how Sanguine was genuinely positive with someone he was fighting lmao
Definitely some unfinished business in this story. Would make a great serial. I also liked the POV switch.
